As many as 27 people, including many children, have been shot in an attack at a primary school in the US state of Connecticut, according to US media reports.
On 13 March 1996 Thomas Hamilton walked into the gym at Dunblane primary school in Scotland and killed 16 young children together with their teacher. He also injured 13 other children and three teachers. Hamilton, a former scoutmaster, then shot himself.
Public outrage in the UK resulted in the banning of handguns in February 1997.
At a time when families should be coming together to celebrate Christmas there will be unbearable heartache as the realization of what has happened hits home. This senseless killing has to stop. In a country which stacks ammunition like cans of baked beans and gives a free gun for every bank account opened, the gun lobby cannot continue to stand by their Second Amendment Rights.
President Barack Obama said the following, in a statement issued earlier today:
“As a country, we have been through this too many times. Whether it’s an elementary school in Newtown, or a shopping mall in Oregon, or a temple in Wisconsin, or a movie theater in Aurora, or a street corner in Chicago – these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods, and these children are our children. And we’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics”
My prayers and thoughts are with all those who have been affected by monstrous act of gun violence. I pray also for a change of heart for all those who support such liberal gun laws.
